Only president’s clemency left for Khaleda to go abroad: Law Minister

Law minister Anisul Huq said on Wednesday that only president’s clemency was left for Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia to fly abraod for advanced medical treatment.

But, for seeking president’s clemency, Khaleda Zia will have to plead guilty, the minister said while addressing a press conference at the secretariat.

 

Anisul, flanked with Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, and law secretary Golam Sarwar, said ‘top criminal’ Tofail Ahmed Joseph was also released on a presidential clemency after he had pleaded guilty.

The law minister argued that there was no legal option under Section 401 of CrPC for the government to let the former prime minister Khaleda Zia to go abroad.

He explained that they had imposed the conditions of staying home and not travel abroad as the government desired seeing success of her treatment in Bangladesh. Asked about the BNP’s remarks of rejecting further conditions for allowing her treatment abroad, he replied that no such meeting was held for setting conditions.
